Acadians of St. Gabriel
Local historian John A. Hebert will speak about the Acadians of St. Gabriel at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Gonzales Branch Library.
About 50 Acadian families landed at Fort St. Gabriel on Bayou Manchac and the Mississippi River on Aug. 17, 1767. A day later, they began dividing the lands given to them by Antonio de Ulloa, the first Spanish governor of Louisiana. These exiles from Acadia settled in, built homes, worked the land and became our Acadian ancestors.
