Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University conferred its first doctoral degrees during its fall commencement ceremony Dec. 15 at Raising Cane’s River Center .

The Rev. Joshua Johnson, a priest for the Diocese of Baton Rouge and pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant, was the keynote speaker. He is a graduate of Southern University, St. Joseph’s Seminary College and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. Johnson has spoken at conferences across the country and is writing his first book, according to a news release.

Twenty-two of the 130 undergraduate and graduate degrees given during the ceremony were Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia degrees. The 94-year-old school, formerly known as Our Lady of the Lake College, enrolled its first doctorate students in spring 2015.

Program graduates will be prepared to meet state, regional and national needs as doctorally prepared advanced practice nurses in leadership positions in health-related organizations, according to the release.
