The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has kicked off its annual Christmas Crusade for Children program, which provides Christmas gifts for children through age 12.

“This year’s program, now in its 18th year, has provided thousands of children in our community with toys for Christmas,” Sheriff Jeff Wiley said.

The Sheriff’s Office is accepting toys and/or monetary donations. Collection sites will be set up over the next few weeks. At 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3, the community is invited to help participate in shopping night for toys for qualifying families at the Gonzales Wal-Mart.

Ascension Parish residents can pick up applications from the Sheriff’s Office at the Donaldsonville Courthouse, the Gonzales Business Office or the Family Services Division at the Gonzales Courthouse.

Applicants will need to bring a current supplemental nutrition assistance program printout or copies of each child’s birth certificate, a valid Louisiana state photo ID, proof of income and a copy of a current Ascension Parish utility bill showing proof of residency. The application deadline is Nov. 20. Those accepted into the program will be notified by letter.
