Ascension Republican Women recently delivered dictionaries to Ascension Parish third-graders as part of the club’s dictionary project, an event organizer said.

Since 2010, Ascension Republican Women members have provided dictionaries to the third-graders in the Ascension Parish primary schools, club President Joyce LaCour said.

Students in seven of the parish’s 14 primary schools have received dictionaries thanks to the program, she said.

The theme of this year’s project was “Up With Words,” she said.

“The dictionary that we choose, ‘A Student’s Dictionary,’ offers a wealth of resource material in addition to its use as a comprehensive dictionary,” LaCour said. “Our members and some husbands participate in the deliveries and all delight in the reaction and enthusiasm of the children.”

LaCour said funding for the project comes from the generosity of their members and businesses, professionals and elected officials in the community.

The goal of the nationwide nonprofit Dictionary Project is to “assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary,” the organization’s website states.

The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come, the website states.

Since its implementation in 1995, more than 18 million children have received dictionaries through the project.
