The River Region Art Association is accepting vendor applications for its Art Gumbo Market, which starts March 16.

The market is a monthly open-air sales event featuring arts and crafts booths under the trees at the entrance of Houmas House Plantation on River Road.

Free and open to the public, the market is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month and three Saturdays in December.

Additional market dates may be scheduled when a major Mississippi River cruise boat lands at Houmas House, a news release from the association says.

To be accepted, a vendor must be a member of River Region Art Association. Annual membership dues are $40. Booth items must be original art or handmade crafts. Commercially manufactured or resale items are strictly prohibited.

For more information on the market and to receive a vendor application and membership form, call art market chairwoman Mary Demarest at (504) 256-5072 or email or JoAnn Eiswirth at Forms can also be picked up at the Art Gallery located in the gift shop at Houmas House Plantation.

The River Region Art Association, founded in 1993, was created to bring artists and arts advocates together to improve public awareness of all art forms, the release says.

The association supports local artists, promotes the arts in the community, and provides educational opportunities for emerging and established artists, students, and area residents.

The association is funded in part through donations from residents and area businesses, and the parish of Ascension; and through in-kind support from Houmas House Plantation and the city of Gonzales. It is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council.
