An 18-year-old Jackson man accused of stealing 28 guns from a local sporting goods store early Wednesday turned himself in to police several hours after the theft and was booked on burglary and gun theft charges, authorities reported.

Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer said Braelin Whitfield was caught on surveillance footage entering the Thompson Creek Sporting Goods store in Jackson and stuffing several guns into a bag Wednesday morning.

The State Police spokesman said several agencies were assisted by tips from the public in the investigation that led to Whitfield’s arrest.

He said Whitfield turned himself in to detectives at the East Feliciana Parish Prison shortly before midnight on Wednesday.

Sandifer said State Police, the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on Thursday recovered 18 of the 28 weapons Whitfield is accused of stealing and are working to recover the other 10 firearms.

Whitfield was booked into the Parish Prison on two counts of simple burglary and 28 counts of theft of a firearm.

Sandifer said the case remains under investigation and more arrests could be pending.
