Ponchatoula High School’s dance team, the Wavettes, was honored for its outstanding home routine performance, winning first place in the Large Varsity division during the Universal Dance Association’s summer camp in June at Southeastern Louisiana University, a news release from PHS said.
This win qualifies the team to compete at UDA’s National Dance Team Championship.
The Wavettes received a Superior Trophy, given to the team that receives all blue ribbons during individual evaluations of the dances learned at camp. Also, the Wavettes received the Leadership Award, an award voted on by all of the camp participants and recognizes the team that they most admire at camp, the news release said. Rounding out the group awards, the girls also received the Drill Down Top Team Award, having received the most individual drill down ribbons throughout the week. Also recognized at camp were seniors Samantha Ponseti, Caroline Wagner, Cara Anderson, Casey Zweifel and Elayne Pape as All-American Dancers.
The seniors received medals and the opportunity to dance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Senior Caroline Wagner won first runner-up in the final Drill Down Competition, beating out hundreds of competitors.
“We are so excited for our team, especially since it is our last year,” Wagner said. “We were up against very competitive teams and through our team’s hard work during summer practices, we accomplished winning first place.”
