Officials with North Oaks Health Systems led an orientation on June 7 for 53 teens selected to participate in its Junior Volunteer summer program.

The program runs from June 13 to Aug. 5 and offers teens ages 14 to 17 a community service opportunity.

Ponchatoula High School senior Andee Poché has been a Junior Volunteer every summer since 2013, racking up 305 service hours helping in the Volunteer Services office, hospital Gift Shop and the Heart Health Services department.

Poché said the program has improved her interpersonal communication skills and comfort level with public speaking, which will be useful in her chosen future career as a chiropractor.
