Early birds who might have been flying in for a treat at this birdfeeder in Villa West subdivision in Hammond were greeted by icicles on a sub-freezing morning recently. Communities throughout Southeast Louisiana experienced rare icicles hanging from eaves, outdoor furniture and other objects during the unseasonably cold weather.

Livingston and Tangipahoa area residents faced freezing temperatures last week thanks to a cold blast that brought ice, snow and closed icy roads.

In Hammond, writer Vic Couvillion found a backyard bird feeder in the Villa West subdivision where migrating birds were looking for a warm place to hide.
