Baton Rouge student Cruz Crawford is New York-bound in June for the West Point Summer Leaders Experience.

More than 5,000 juniors nationwide applied, and 1,000 were selected for the program, which gives participants the opportunity to experience life at West Point. The U.S. military academy is 50 miles north of New York City.

The students spend a week living in the cadet barracks, eating in the Cadet Mess and participating in athletic, leadership, athletic and military workshops, a news release said. All participants take part in virtual-reality war simulation and military and physical fitness training, as well as three of 15 offered workshops.

Cruz is a junior at Episcopal School of Baton Rouge. He has been involved with the Youth Legislature, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, Design Studio, National History Day, Student Ambassadors, Boys State this summer and the Knights’ baseball and football teams.
