Sacred Heart of Jesus School spent May preparing to say farewell to its 34 eighth-graders.
The eighth-graders and their families were treated to the annual Eighth Grade Family Supper at the Catholic Life Center on May 14. During the supper, students received nonacademic awards and viewed a slideshow of their final year at the school, according to a news release.
The next day, the students and their parents took the Farewell Walk throughout the campus, giving faculty, staff and students in prekindergarten through seventh grade an opportunity to say farewell. The younger students made goodbye signs and cards for the eighth-graders.
The Rev. Miles Wals, Sacred Heart of Jesus parish pastor, celebrated the eighth-grade promotion Mass on May 16 at the church, assisted by Deacon David Dawson. During the Mass, the 34 eighth-graders received their diplomas. Blake Hester was recognized for having the highest scholastic average.
Other students receiving awards were Lindsey Landry, Spirit of Sacred Heart Award; Cecelia Werth and Berend Grandt, Charles S. Marabella ’64 Memorial Art Award; Anna Musso and Willie Bracken Jr., Ronnie Demouy Memorial Award; Blake Savoie, Evan Kennedy Mills Religion Award; Blake Hester, Sister Patricia Wolfe Love of Math Award; Zoie Monroe, Sacred Heart Men’s Club Service Award; and Claire Perrault and Sophia Guillory, Knights of Columbus Council 3298 Scholarship.
Students recognized for the Diocesan Serra Essay, sponsored annually by the Serra Club of Baton Rouge, were winner Guillory and honorable mention Asia Green. Each school chooses three junior high students’ essays for the competition, which had the theme “Mary at the Foot of the Cross” this year.
Madeleine Brown received recognition for being Sacred Heart’s eighth-grade Student of the Year. Guillory and Bracken were recognized as Brotherhood & Sisterhood honorees.
Honor roll students recognized were Gabriela Barbin, Guillory, Hester, Brooklyn Hoffmann, Kourtni Hughes, Musso, Perrault, Werth and Jemma Wood, Principal’s Honor Roll (4.0); Ian Barber, Anna Grace Chapman, Hannah Jones, Jack Massey, Frances Rhodes, Madelyn Canezaro, Alex Christofi, Claire Graves, K.K. Guttzeit and Landry, Gold Honor Roll (3.66 to 3.99); and Brown, Aubrey Carroll, Raelyn Edwards and Grandt, Gold Honor Roll (3.33 to 3.5).
Other graduates are William Anderson, Kelby Chenevert, Rayne Cooper, Hillary Leonard, Dashiell Pickenheim, Langston Scott and Edward Shanks.
Special recognition was given to the family of Albert “Goody” and Lauren Guttzeit for their 19 years as a Sacred Heart of Jesus School family. Their children are Class of 2008 graduate Joseph, Class of 2017 graduate Annie Laurie and Class of 2018 graduate K.K.
The Home and School Association hosted a reception for the graduates and their families in the Parish Hall following the Mass.
