Baton Rouge FLAIM and FLAIM II students displayed their knowledge and creativity at the program’s annual International Festival, held April 30 for French immersion students and May 1 for Spanish and Mandarin Chinese immersion students.
Each class recently completed the school’s international studies curriculum, which ties learning about the history, geography, economy and culture of a country to their regular curriculum. Students studied China, Paraguay, Panama, Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil and India during the 2014-15 school year.
FLAIM, or Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet, is the only public school option for language immersion in the Baton Rouge area. Students arrive in kindergarten or first grade knowing only English, a news release said. They receive instruction in math, science and social studies in either French, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese and leave fifth grade fluent in their chosen language, the release said.
