Two true stories of New Orleans jazz musicians set the stage for a children’s painting session at 4 p.m. Thursday at Fairwood Branch Library.

Kids ages 7 to 11 will paint while listening to recordings of the artists’ music and explore the styles from their different eras.

Under the sea

Central Community Theatre’s production of “The Little Mermaid Jr.” kicks off Thursday at the Manship Theatre, 100 Lafayette St.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.

Summer movies

The Main Library’s Children’s Storytime Area will show “Matilda” for children at 2:30 p.m. Friday. All children younger than 9 must be accompanied by an adult. For group registration, call (225) 231-3760.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid” is the Main Library’s Summer Movie in the Plaza at 7 p.m. Friday. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for this free, outdoor movie series.


Celebrate Juneteenth from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Gus Young Park with recreational games, music, socialization, a community health fair and refreshments. State Rep. C. Denise Marcelle is sponsoring the event.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration in the United States commemorating the end of slavery, according to BREC.

Quilt show

Local quilters will display their work and answer questions about quilting during a quilt show in Fairwood Branch Library’s meeting room from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

‘Reading Rocks!’

Johnette Downing presents “Reading Rocks!” for children ages 2 to 11 at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the meeting room at Fairwood Branch Library. The hourlong show features south Louisiana music for children.

Gator tunes

Alligators are the focus of a story and craft for children ages 8 to 11 at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library on Tuesday. It gets started at 2:30 p.m.

Listen to “Alberto the Dancing Alligator” by Richard Waring, then make alligator castanets.

Lyric tile art

A tile art craft for teens gets underway at Fairwood Branch Library at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Use ceramic tiles, book pages and paper scraps to make a tile bearing a favorite song lyric.

Overcoming divorce

A book discussion and video presentation by Dr. Cheryl M. Brandon begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library. Brandon, the author of “Becoming Stronger in the Lord During and After Divorce,” will sign books following the presentation.

Land down under

Australian-themed music, culture, puppetry, comedy and more fill “Didgeridoo Down Under” at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The show is for children ages 2 to 11 with families.

The Main Library is accepting registration for Wednesday’s Cool Careers session on beauty and personal care. It’s from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in large conference room 102.

A panel of experts will cover careers in the beauty industry with teens and young adults interested in exploring new career paths.
