Book sale

Friends of the Magnolia Library’s biannual library book sale wraps up Thursday in the first-foor atrium at Baton Rouge Community College’s Acadian site, 3250 N. Acadian Thruway E. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Gently used books of all genres will be available at bargain prices, with proceeds going toward library programming, student activities, community service and outreach and other library-associated activities.

Doggone good

Fairwood Branch Library welcomes members of the Louisiana Capital City Obedience Club and their dogs at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Children ages 3 to 11 and their families will learn about responsible pet ownership and see the dogs show off their training.

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center’s Swamp Volunteer Day is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is welcome to help improve the swamp’s habitat by aiding staff in clearing invasive plant species.

Canary Islanders

The Canary Islanders Heritage Society of Louisiana meets at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Main Library.

Society member and author Stephen Estopinal will be talking about the island of La Gomera, its topography and the whistle language of Silbo. Local surnames that may have origins in La Gomera include Barossa/Varossa, Asola, deArmas, Lapaz and Rodriguez.

Volunteer appreciation

Vets at the zoo

Active-duty military members and veterans presenting valid military ID will receive free admission to Baton Rouge Zoo on Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day. Up to five guests will be allowed in free with a veteran or service member.
