The Houston native was named one of Houston's most fascinating people by the Houston Chronicle, and the Woman's Center will be the first fitness center outside of Texas to offer Soul Grooves.

A fairly new fitness trend is coming to Baton Rouge, said Dana Michell, of Woman’s Hospital.

Soul Grooves classes, which combine the energy of hip-hop and the fun of dance to get women fit, have been popular in Texas, where Houston-based founder Tammy Harris developed the classes, said Yong Kwon, of YK Creative, Harris’ public relations firm.

Soul Grooves has grown popular in Texas, Kwon said, where Harris has certified about 50 fitness coaches to use her methods.

The Woman’s Center for Wellness, at Jefferson Highway and Bluebonnet Boulevard, will be the first studio outside of Texas to offer Soul Grooves classes weekly, Michell said, and Harris will kick it off by teaching two 30-minute classes herself at the center on Saturday. Classes will begin at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and are free, Michell said.

Harris won Top Fitness Instructor on “Live With Kelly and Michael” and led the talk show hosts in an on-air Soul Grooves class on live television.

Renee Belcher at the center said the classes filled up quickly, so they moved into a bigger space to open up more slots. All those interested in trying Soul Grooves should call the center, (225) 924-8709.

“We’re really excited to have her come,” Belcher, said.

It’s been an exciting year for Harris and her team, as well, said Kwon, who was organizing Soul Grooves’ annual gala in Houston last weekend, where Harris celebrated the success of the company and her recent honor as one of the Houston Chronicle’s 50 Most Fascinating People in Houston for 2014.

Harris is a lifelong dancer, and a dance teacher, and was a member of the Houston Rockets’ Power Dancers for four years. She worked through her own struggles with weight, according to a release from Soul Grooves, and earned certification from Aerobics Fitness Association of America.

Harris launched her company Soul Grooves LLC, “with the goal of creating total life solutions for people that involve all aspects of living well, including health, wellness, weight loss and overall lifestyle.

“By sharing a unique and inspiring philosophy that stresses the integration of fitness, nutrition and behavioral changes, Tammy inspires people to reach their personal goals, both physical and psychological. The company’s motto is ‘Health and wellness is a way of life,’ ” according to its website.
