The Afrocentric Focus/Maat Study Group of Baton Rouge invites the public to the 28th annual Kwanzaa Celebration at 5 p.m. Saturday.
The event will be held at Southern University in T.T. Allain Hall’s Global Conference Room (room 313) with Dr. James L. Conyers as featured speaker. Vendors will be available with African heritage clothing, jewelry, art and books.
Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture observed for seven days beginning Dec. 26. This year’s Kwanzaa Celebration is being held on the fifth day of Kwanzaa, which focuses on the fifth principle of Nia, representing purpose.

Ice Skating on the River wraps up another holiday season Jan. 7 at Raising Cane’s River Center. Ice skating sessions are offered 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. daily in the arena.

Little Chefs Academy
Young chefs can learn the basics of cooking with BREC’s Little Chefs Academy at Highland Road Community Park from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The class teaches children ages 4 to 8 the joy and value of cooking in a safe work environment where kids can show their independence and creativity.

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center invites children ages 7 to 12 to a crafting project from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 4. Participants will create a fabric collage of a striped alligator while learning about fiber art creation. All materials will be provided.

Registration is open for the Main Library’s 13-week workshop, called The Artist’s Way, which begins Jan. 23.
Participants will find focus, rediscover their creativity and find their authentic selves through a hands-on program that draws inspiration from Julia Cameron’s “The Artistic Way” and the creation of art. No artistic experience is required.
