Baton Rouge crime scene

Lafayette police will begin cracking down on juvenile curfew violators.

Two men were killed in a double shooting early Saturday morning in St. Helena Parish, the sheriff's office said.

The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. in a rural area in the 1400 block of Opal Bennett Road.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said. The victims' names haven't been released.

Melva Jones, 76, lives on the street where the shooting took place.

“This is a shock to me,” she said. “You would think that you live in the country and things would be fine, but it seems like everybody’s got a gun.”

Jones, who moved from California to take care of family members in Louisiana, added that the news of a shooting on her street is “devastating.”

No motive or suspects have been identified yet.

St. Helena Sheriff's Office Chief Joe Chaney confirmed that several interviews were conducted this morning following the incident and that the investigation is still ongoing.
