The Louisiana Veterans Foundation presented the West Feliciana Sheriff’s Mounted Posse with a $500 donation Dec. 1 in appreciation for the posse’s assistance during the Vets Fest in September.

The mounted group held its first Ranch Rodeo at the West Feliciana Sports Park’s rodeo arena in St. Francisville, the first event to be held in the new arena.

“The weather was great, and the Ranch Rodeo was well attended. Everyone really seemed to be having a good time,” Sheriff J. Austin Daniel said. “The big hit was the stick horse race, which local politicians participated in. Congratulations, to Lee Chastain on winning.”

Lt. Michael Taylor, head of the mounted group, said the unit was appreciative of the donation, which will be used to purchase needed supplies.

The Sheriff’s Mounted Posse unit includes about 15 local horsemen who volunteer their time assisting in search and rescue operations, assisting animal control with cattle and providing additional security at parish events.

“We just wanted to show our appreciation in a tangible way. Holding the Ranch Rodeo during the Vets Fest really helped us with attendance this year,” said Louisiana Veterans Foundation Chairman and St. Francisville American Legion Adjutant Jim Groody.

Activities at the annual veterans festival included the rodeo, a fishing tournament, vintage car display, off-road races, a silent auction, bands and cook-offs.

All proceeds from the festival benefit local military and veterans charities.
