A 61-year-old Lottie man died Friday after a head-on collision with an Acadian Ambulance on La. 411 in Pointe Coupee Parish, according to State Police.

An initial investigation indicates Brett Bergeron was traveling southbound on La. 411 in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado about 7 p.m. when his pickup truck, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line and struck a northbound Acadian Ambulance being driven by Peter Woods, of Breaux Bridge, police said in a news release.

Bergeron suffered fatal injuries from the crash, despite being properly restrained. The Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Bergeron dead at the scene, the release states.

Woods and his passenger, an Acadian Ambulance employee, were both also properly restrained and received only minor injuries, police said. They were not transporting a patient at the time of the crash, police said.

Police do not suspect impairment to be a factor, but a toxicology sample was taken from Bergeron to the crime lab for analysis. Woods, 45, submitted to a chemical breath test and exhibited no signs of impairment, the release says.
