A crash involving a car and a tow truck late Tuesday in Iberville Parish left a White Castle man dead, State Police said.
Orthello Batiste, 19, was killed in the crash, which occurred just before 11 p.m. on La. 1 at the intersection of Cpl. Herman Brown Jr. Street.
Batiste was traveling westbound on Cpl. Herman Brown Jr. Street in a 2012 Acura TL, State Police said in a news release. At the same time, Russell Gerace Jr., 36, was traveling northbound on La. 1 in a 2008 Ford tow truck for Advantage Towing.
For unknown reasons, Batiste failed to yield at the stop sign and drove into the path of Gerace’s vehicle, which struck Batiste’s car on the driver’s side, State Police said.
Batiste was properly restrained but sustained fatal injuries. The Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene.
Batiste’s passenger was not wearing a seat belt and received serious injuries. Gerace was properly restrained and received minor injuries, State Police said.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis, State Police said.
