For the second year, Marie Kennedy’s family has shopped for groceries to donate to the Zachary Food Pantry.

In December, Marie and her husband, Fred Kennedy, and their adult children and seven grandchildren shopped at Winn-Dixie in Zachary, filling their carts with 283 pounds of food.

Each adult child and grandchild received $55 each — $50 for food and $5 for taxes.

“We want to teach our grandkids about tithing and to learn to give back,” Marie Kennedy said.

Last year, the Kennedy clan donated more than 300 pounds of food to Zachary’s food pantry.

“I am a former employee of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, so I have a bit more insight as to the kinds of things they need most, as well as how crucial it is to give to these organizations that feed the hungry,” Kennedy said.

The matriarch hopes more families will take note of what her family has done and do the same.

Next year, instead of exchanging gifts with some Baton Rouge area relatives, Kennedy is going to suggest a similar shopping excursion.

“The younger children have fun, they learn math skills and, more importantly, they learn the lesson that it’s more important to give than to receive,” Kennedy said.
