May 1, traditionally the deadline that colleges require admitted students to submit a letter of intent, was declared National College Signing Day, thanks to the efforts of first lady Michelle Obama, who, in 2014, said she felt every student who worked hard to achieve the milestone of going to college should receive the same enthusiastic support as athletes do when signing national letters of intent on the first Wednesday of February.

This year, more than 600 Signing Day events were scheduled to honor seniors planning to continue their education at two- and four-year colleges, community colleges or technical or vocational programs.

Several Zachary High School seniors wore T-shirts or sweatshirts in support of their intended alma maters as they signed or submitted letters of intent to Baton Rouge Community College, Dillard University, LSU, Louisiana Tech, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Louisiana at Monroe and Southeastern, among others.
