Dr. Joshua Best, a physician at Bayou Regional Women’s Clinic in Zachary, is planning the second annual Christmas in July toy and uniform drive slated for July 11-22.

Best is encouraging residents to drop off new or gently used toys and school uniforms at the collection box in the front lobby of Lane Regional Medical Center, 6300 Main St., Zachary.

Additional collection boxes are at Future Cut, Pretty Woman Boutique, Sports 4 Life and the Zachary Fire and Police departments.

“What a better time to clean out closets and donate those forgotten toys and outgrown uniforms than summertime,” Best said. “I urge anyone who has the ability to make a contribution to do so and provide some summertime cheer to boys and girls in need throughout our region.”

Members of the nonprofit Zachary Charity League will collect the donated toys and uniforms and bring them to Mary Bellcase, director of the volunteer group, Zachary Community Helpers.

Bellcase and her team will work to identify area families in need, overseeing delivery of the age-appropriate toys and uniforms, Best said.

Some toy suggestions for infants and children up to age 15 include: books; traditional board, card and dice games; puzzles; sporting goods and outdoor games; building sets; dolls and action figures; cars and trucks; scooters and wagons; art supplies, crafts and crayons; science kits; musical and electronic items (video games, cameras and music players); and costumes.

Best asks that no broken toys or toys with missing pieces or sharp edges and no guns or toys that encourage violence be donated. Uniforms should be in wearable condition and not be stained or torn.

For those who wish to make a monetary donation so that Zachary Community Helpers can purchase additional toys and uniforms, send checks with “Christmas in July” written in the memo line, to: Zachary Community Helpers, 7345 Lower Zachary Road, Zachary, LA 70791.
