This year’s Elementary State Championship Fitness Meet was held April 16 at the Carl Maddox Field House on LSU’s campus in Baton Rouge.
Nineteen parishes had fitness teams from elementary schools across the state competing in events such as the 50-yard dash, 600-yard run, shuttle run, pull-ups, curl-ups, standing long jump and V-sit and reach.
The top 10 boys and top 10 girls also were recognized at the meet.
This was the first time in this event’s 21-year history that the championship games ended in a tie.
Co-champions were fitness teams from Lafayette and Rapides parishes. East Baton Rouge finished in second place followed by Caddo, St. James, St. Tammany, Evangeline and Zachary’s Copper Mill Elementary School fitness squad, which finished eighth overall.
CMES team member Jamyia Woodall was a top 10 finisher; Rhen Langley had the fastest time in the 600-meter run with 1:40; Jordan Williams placed third in curl-ups; and Woodall finished third in the 50-yard dash.
The CMES fitness team also includes Jaydan Jackson, Alissa Odell and Jalen Wright.
