The sixth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser — hosted by Zachary High School on April 21 — raised $4,000 for the Zachary Food Pantry.
In the weeks prior to the event, which aims to end world hunger at local levels, high school art students handcrafted more than 300 pottery bowls, and for a $10 donation, attendees selected one of the bowls to take home as a reminder of their part in the effort.
Also for their donation, attendees were treated to gumbo donated by Cajun Catch, a bread roll donated by Bunny Bread and iced tea donated by Raising Cane’s in Zachary.
Food Pantry Director Reggie Dykes, board member Tommy Daigle and volunteer Roma Prejean joined ZHS art teachers and students as well as community leaders and representatives from the three donating businesses for the check presentation May 17.
Fellow art teachers Mandy Bradley and Megan Buccere help McCleary organize the event each spring.
