Blue Cross Blue Shield Louisiana

Blue Cross Blue Shield Louisiana is waiving out of pocket costs for members who get tested for COVID-19 in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control guidelines. And for the next two months, the organization is also waiving out of pocket medical costs for treatment of COVID-19.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, the largest health insurer in the state, is waiving out of pocket costs for coronavirus testing and medical care for in-network health care providers.

The goal is to ease any anxiety and stress about whether procedures related to coronavirus care may be covered by insurance and encourage everyone who may have COVID-19 to be tested and treated for the disease, the insurer said.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield previously decided to cover all medically necessary coronavirus-related diagnostic testing, which aligned with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. The Louisiana Department of Insurance ordered all health insurers across the state to cover COVID-19 diagnostic testing several weeks ago.

“We don’t want anyone to delay seeking COVID-19 testing or treatment because they are worried about how much they’ll have to pay for it," said Dr. Steven Udvarhelyi, CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Louisiana.

The decision is effective for medical care provided to patients between April 1 and May 31 and includes any coinsurance, deductibles or other fees care by physicians, urgent care centers, hospitals and other health care providers. It includes individual members and those who get insurance through an employer.

Blue Cross Blue Shield already dropped the cost of telemedicine for insured individuals to zero.

The state order also included a provision that prohibited what is known as step therapy, where health care providers would normally be forced to try alternative treatments first before moving forward with physician-recommended medications.
