A local professional boxer was shot early Tuesday while leaving a bar in Baton Rouge and later died in the hospital, his death marking the city's second fatal shooting in three days.

Baton Rouge police said the shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m. and the victim was found in a field near the intersection of North Street and North 48th Street suffering from gunshot injuries. He was transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead soon thereafter.

Authorities identified the victim as Justin Thomas, 35, who's a professional boxer based in Baton Rouge. Thomas was shot while walking to his car after leaving a nightclub in the area, Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr. said.

Crime scene tape remained strung between nearby telephone poles Tuesday afternoon, and blood stains were visible in the grass along with rubber gloves discarded by first responders. The field where the victim was found is less than a block away from Bennie's Bar and Lounge.

Detectives are following up on leads, though no one was detained for questioning at the scene, McKneely said. The motive remains unknown.

This marks the second Baton Rouge homicide within the past few days. Another man was found shot to death inside a hotel room Sunday morning, but it's unclear when exactly that shooting occurred.

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to contact the Baton Rouge Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
