A man was fatally shot on Florida Boulevard at North Acadian Thruway about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola.
Bruce Cofield, 59, who is believed to have been homeless, was found in the road dead from gunshot wounds, Coppola said.
Markia Johnson, who lives near the intersection, said she heard about 12 shots fired – six shots, then a pause, then six more.
"We heard it all," Johnson, 41, said. "I hate to say it, but I hate Baton Rouge."

Johnson said her son saw Cofield after the shooting, and recognized him as a homeless man who often sits with a sign at the intersection. She said they know him as "Mr. Bruce."
"The man didn't bother anyone, not to get shot like that," Johnson said. "It's senseless."
Coppola said there are no suspects or motives in the shooting.
Johnson said she had recently bought Cofield some food and given him some money after talking with him.
Johnson, who moved to the Capital City about five years ago, said she plans to move soon and take her two sons, 18 and 19, with her.
"I do not want to see my two boys dead on the street," she said.
The killing is the 71st homicide in East Baton Rouge Parish in 2017.
Coppola asked that anyone with information on the shooting to contact Violent Crimes at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
