A driver who made an illegal U-turn was struck and killed early Monday morning in a collision that sent another person to a hospital with serious injuries, a police official said.
Bobby Lee, 28, died due to multi-system trauma, said East Baton Rouge Parish coroner William “Beau” Clark.
Lee was behind the wheel of a Dodge pickup traveling in the outside northbound lane on North 22nd Street when he swung into the path of a Chevrolet pickup in the inside northbound lane of that road about 1:15 a.m., said Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola.
“For unknown reasons, (the Dodge’s driver) decided to make a U-turn in the middle of the roadway,” Coppola said, in a statement.
Lee was pronounced dead not long after authorities arrived at the scene in the 2200 block of North 22nd St. The Chevrolet’s driver, a man who has not been named, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, Coppola said.
Coppola, who said the crash is still under investigation, was not immediately able to provide information about whether seatbelts were used or whether alcohol or drug use played a role in the incident.
