An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for a Baton Rouge woman accused of deserting her 7-year-old daughter at an abandoned house on a street off Florida Boulevard, a Baton Rouge Police report says.
A woman called police when she discovered the child was left at 1235 Windsor Drive, Detective Eric Kenny of the Special Victim’s Unit said in the report. The 7-year-old girl told police that her mother, Shirley Knox, 35, said she would come back after she went to a doctor’s appointment.
Officers said the location, outside the abandoned residence, was known for illegal drug activity.
The girl said that she was hungry and had not eaten, Kenny said, and the police fed her and took her to Baton Rouge’s Third District Precinct. Police contacted the Department of Child and Family Services, and DCFS contacted the mother, who had refused to respond to police. DCFS then took the girl into custody, Kenny said.
Knox, 2505 Amarillo St., is still at large. She is wanted on a count of child desertion.
