Baton Rouge Police arrested a 42-year-old man after a blow he allegedly dealt to a 10-year-old boy’s face with a leather belt landed the child in the emergency room.
A school counselor alerted officials with the Department of Children and Family Services about injuries to the boy, who had swelling and bruising on the left side of his face, a Baton Rouge Police report says.
Police officers met the boy’s mother and a DCFS official at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center Saturday, where the boy was treated for his injuries, the report says.
The boy’s mother told officers Derrick Williams, of High Point Road, hit her son in the face with a leather belt, the report says.
After officers placed Williams under arrest, he admitted to hitting the boy with the belt but said it was an accident “due to the victim moving around while being disciplined.”
Police booked Williams into Parish Prison on one count of cruelty to juveniles. His bail is set at $50,000.
