A Baker man died in a head-on crash Friday in West Feliciana Parish after his car crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic.
Gary Mitchell, 62, was driving southbound on U.S. 61 about noon when his 1999 Buick Century for unknown reasons drifted into the path of a minivan traveling in the opposite direction, State Police Trooper 1st Class Bryan Lee said in a news release. The collision, just south of La. 66, sent Mitchell to a West Feliciana hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lee said.
The minivan’s driver, Clifton Lampton, 68, and his passenger suffered moderate injuries. All three people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, Lee said.
Impairment is not suspected as a factor in the incident, but Lampton and Mitchell are being tested for drug use, Lee said. An autopsy on Mitchell is pending, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
