Emergency crews responded to reports of a burning vehicle Wednesday morning off Florida Boulevard and found a man inside suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, officials said.

While initial reports suggested the incident was an attempted homicide, Baton Rouge police said Wednesday afternoon that detectives believe it was a suicide attempt.

The man was hospitalized with injuries that were considered life threatening, according to police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola Jr.

East Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services spokesman Mike Chustz said medics responded to a call about a vehicle on fire and then discovered the injured man.

The burned out vehicle, an older model white pickup truck, was located behind the Corner Square shopping center at the intersection of Florida Boulevard and Sherwood Forest Boulevard. It had extensive damage from the fire, including all windows missing and tires melting off.

Police launched their investigation and ultimately had the truck towed away later Wednesday morning, likely for additional analysis of evidence.

The victim's condition was not immediately available.
