Authorities have made an arrest and are continuing to investigate a possible connection between two shootings that occurred Sunday evening in Clinton.

One person was killed and another injured in the first shooting; there were no injuries in the second incident.

East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeff Travis identified the person who died as Mitchell Matthews, 33. He was shot at his home along with another person whose injuries don't appear life-threatening, Travis said.

Clyde Toney III was booked into the parish jail Monday on one count each of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

That shooting took place at a residence on Roosevelt Street just before dark Sunday.

Less than an hour later another shooting occurred on Kernan Street in north Clinton, less than half a mile away. No one was injured in that incident, the sheriff said.

Gunfire is unusual in the small town of Clinton.

"It's just very disappointing," Travis said. "We are still working those two shootings (and) at this time we are considering the possibility that they are connected."

Both of the shootings occurred inside Clinton city limits and deputies are working with the Clinton Police Department on both cases.
