A 12-year-old boy was arrested early Sunday after Baton Rouge police said he sexually assaulted a 7-year-old girl at a foster care group home licensed by the Louisiana Department of Health, according to authorities.
The boy was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish's juvenile detention center on a count of sexual battery, BRPD spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola said.
The Department of Children and Families contracts with Volunteers of America to provide therapeutic foster care services at the group home in Broadmoor, according to DCFS spokeswoman Catherine Heitman. This group home provides services for children aged 3 to 13 with severe behavioral disorders or mental illness and professional staff are on duty 24 hours a day, according to the Volunteers of America website.
Heitman would not comment on the allegation of abuse because of confidentiality protections under the law, she said.
