Investigators believe a kitchen appliance may have sparked a house fire on Gayosa Street Friday afternoon.

Crews arrived about 1:27 p.m. at 1836 Gayosa St., where flames were pouring from the rear of the house, said Mark Miles, a Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman.

While firefighters extinguished the blaze in less than 15 minutes, the kitchen sustained heavy smoke and fire damage, Miles said.

The fire caused about $45,000 in damage to the home and its contents, he said. The house was valued at $40,000.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
