Woman grabs machete, claims self-defense
A wheelchair-bound woman in her 70s picked up a machete to defend herself, claiming a friend who was drunk slapped her on Fairfields Avenue just before 4 a.m. Friday, arrest records show.
The incident began when the friend, Willie Lee Hughes, 58, became frustrated when the woman wouldn’t take him home, according to the affidavit of probable cause. When he grabbed her arm and hit her across the face, she picked up a machete to defend herself, the affidavit says.
That’s when Hughes called police, the affidavit says. He denied ever having grabbed or slapped the woman.
It was unclear Friday whether the incident took place at the woman’s house.
Hughes, 3909 Tchoupitoulas St., New Orleans, was booked into Parish Prison on counts of cruelty to the infirmed and entering or remaining after forbidden, booking records show.

Harrington later told police that when he arrived, he saw his sister locked in a dispute with her husband over house keys, according to the affidavit of probable cause. Harrington then left the scene to avoid a return attack, but came back to speak to deputies. The brother-in-law was left with multiple large gashes on his head and a bloodied shirt, according to the affidavit.
