Michael Puckett, 33

The treasurer of the Baker Lions Club was arrested Wednesday after being accused of stealing more than $5,000 from the group.

Michael R. Puckett, 33, wrote checks to himself and withdrew money online from the organization’s bank account between September 2015 and last month to pay for his rent and utilities without the consent or knowledge of his fellow group members, according to a Baker Police report sent in an email from Baker Police Chief Mike Knaps.

The money, totaling $5,080, was not for any type of reimbursement to Puckett, the report said.

On numerous occasions, Puckett wrote checks directly to himself or set up an online transfer from the Lions Club fund into his personal bank account, according to the report. Puckett is still a member of the organization but has been inactive for several months, the statement said.

Puckett, of 3640 Olga Lee Drive in Baton Rouge, admitted to the crime and was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a count of theft, the report said. He was assigned a $7,000 bond, according to jail records.
