Child cited in fire that damages house

A child playing with a lighter caused a house fire Thursday at 4771 Monarch Ave., a Fire Department spokesman said.

All four residents escaped unharmed, Curt Monte said.

Firefighters got the call at 5:37 a.m. and the fire destroyed a bedroom and extended into the attic before being brought under control.

The child was counseled at the scene by investigators and will be entered into a juvenile education program about the danger of fire, Monte said.
