Update 10:40 a.m. Tuesday: Police identified the man arrested Monday night after he allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon against officers as St. Julian Baranco, 30, of 2837 Salem Street in Kenner. He faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property.

Original story:

One man is injured and another is on the loose after officers fired at two people they feared were trying to run them over last night in the Brookstown area, said Baton Rouge Police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely.

The incident began around 9:44 p.m. when two officers tried to pull over a silver Hyundai Sonata for a traffic violation and instead of stopping, the automobile fled, turning down a dead-end street and striking two other cars in the 5800 block of Hollywood St, McKneely said.

After the officers got out of their patrol cars, the automobile being apprehended appeared to try to run them over, McKneely said. The officers fired at the vehicle, striking one man inside, who was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, he said. The other man, who has not been identified, fled and is at large.

Officers are allowed to shoot at a fleeing car if the vehicle was used as a weapon against them, McKneely said.
