A Baton Rouge bicyclist traveling west on Goodwood Boulevard on Monday was hit by a vehicle and later died at a hospital.

East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark confirmed that the cyclist died from his injuries. The accident happened just after 2 p.m. near Lobdell Avenue.

The preliminary investigation indicated the cyclist, Clifford Gouner, 64, of 655 North St., was trying to cross the road when he was struck, Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola said.

The driver remained at the scene. Coppola said two children were in the car at the time. None were injured.

A section of the westbound lanes on Goodwood Boulevard was closed by police until about 3:15 p.m. Until that time, the bike remained in the middle of the road near the driver’s white Ford Escape, which had a dent in the front right corner above the headlight.

Coppola said it is unlikely police will file charges against the driver.
