Two people from Texas died in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 12 westbound Thursday, when the driver, who was injured in the crash, ran off the interstate for unknown reasons, State Police said.

The accident happened between the Livingston and Holden exits.

Saul Cerna and Maria Cerna, ages unknown, of Texas, passengers in a 2001 Ford van, were pronounced dead by the Livingston Parish Coronor's Office at the site of the crash that happened shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, Trooper Bryan Lee, spokesperson for Troop A, said in a statement.

The driver, Jesenia Cerna, 27, of Biloxi, Mississippi, traveling west on I-12, ran off the interstate to the right and struck a tree for reasons still under investigation, Lee said.

State Police said that the victims of the crash were not wearing seatbelts. It's unclear if Jesenia Cerna was.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but a toxicology sample will be taken from Jesenia Cerna, State Police said.
