A 23-year-old man was killed during an armed robbery early Saturday outside an apartment building in the Gardere area, authorities said.
Ricardo Alberto Agular was pronounced dead on the scene after crews responded to the shooting around 3:40 a.m., East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said.
Another victim was hospitalized with gunshot wounds but is expected to survive, Hicks said in a news release.
The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Jade Avenue in a subdivision near the intersection of Gardere Lane and Burbank Drive that contains several apartment buildings.
Hicks said Agular, of 8561 Rush Ave., and another man were sitting outside an apartment when they were approached by two men in hooded sweatshirts who demanded money and then fired shots.
Neighbors said Saturday that the two victims were friends and were hanging out drinking beer when the incident occurred.
One woman who lives nearby, who asked that she not be identified by name, said she has heard of other armed robberies happening in the area recently. She said she believes robbers target the neighborhood because many of the people living there are undocumented immigrants, who might be less likely to contact police to report a crime.
"I just hope this stops," she said. "They take someone's life over a phone or a couple bucks. That's the worst part."
