SLAUGHTER — A Baton Rouge man died early Saturday after the vehicle in which he was riding on La. 67 in East Feliciana Parish ran into a pickup truck turning onto the state highway, a State Police spokesman said.

Derrick Daniel, 38, of Zachary, was driving a 2007 Dodge Charger south on La. 67 near Noel Thomas Lane in East Feliciana Parish shortly after midnight when a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck turned from a private drive into Daniel’s path, Trooper First Class Nick Manale said in a news release.

The Chevrolet pickup ran off the road and overturned several times before coming to rest on its wheels, Manale said. The Dodge Charger also ran off the road and hit a culvert before stopping on the east side of the roadway.

The front seat passenger in the Charger, Kenneth Taylor, 33, Baton Rouge, was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Feliciana Parish Coroner’s Office, Manale said.

Troopers suspect Daniel was intoxicated, but the results of a toxicology analysis are still pending, Manale said. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup, Reggie Gross Jr., 36, of Clinton, submitted a breath alcohol test, which showed his blood alcohol level was above the state’s legal limit of 0.08 percent for driving while intoxicated, Manale said.

Gross, who suffered minor injuries, was booked into the East Feliciana Parish Jail on counts of vehicular homicide and failure to yield from a private drive.
