Six youngsters were arrested in Baton Rouge Sunday night and released after a 44-year-old man was shot multiple times by more than one child armed a BB gun, a police official said.

The shooting, which apparently was random, occurred in the 1700 block of North Boulevard about 9:45 p.m., said Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola.

The victim, who was not identified, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was released from a hospital, Coppola said.

Coppola was not able to provide information on which parts of the man’s body had been shot.

“We don’t believe he was targeted,” Coppola said, adding that the incident appeared to be a “random act.”

The six juveniles, who were not identified because of their ages, were arrested and later released to their parents or guardians, Coppola said.

None of the accused were booked into jail, but each face a count of aggravated second-degree battery in the juvenile court system, he said.

Several BB guns were used, but Coppola was unable to say if each youngster was equipped with a weapon.

No evidence indicates that the children and the man knew each other, Coppola said.
