A 3-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital by her mother Saturday afternoon after the girl’s 6-year-old brother accidentally shot her in the face with a loaded handgun found in the family’s apartment, Baton Rouge police said.
The girl survived the shooting, said police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, and successfully came through surgery Sunday.
It wasn’t immediately clear how serious her injuries are.
Detectives are questioning several people who were in the apartment in the 4000 block of Denham Street at 4:30 p.m. Saturday when the shooting occurred, McKneely said.
A man who detectives suspect owns the gun the children were playing with fled after the shooting and had not been located on Sunday, McKneely said.
No arrests have been made but McKneely said detectives are considering possible criminal counts in the incident.
“Gun safety is a big issue,” McKneely said.
Several neighbors at the bustling Denham Street apartment complex said they weren’t home when the shooting happened and didn’t know how the child was doing.
No one answered the door when a reporter knocked at the family’s apartment Sunday.
