A man was found dead on Fuqua Street with his pants and shoes missing following a possible armed robbery late Tuesday night, authorities said.

The man was identified as Frankie Lee Caddo, 50, who lived in an apartment around the corner from where the shooting occurred. Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely said Caddo died from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Caddo had recently acquired a lump sum of money and was making purchases with it, which contributed to investigators' belief that robbery was a possible motive, McKneely said.

A passer-by noticed the body in the roadway and called for assistance. Crews responded around 9:10 p.m. to the 1900 block of Fuqua Street near BREC Memorial Stadium. Caddo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Few people had gathered there Monday night as police investigated the quiet street, cordoning off an area stretching roughly from North 19th to North 20th.

One woman who lives nearby said she heard one gunshot shortly after 9 p.m. When she looked outside, emergency crews had already arrived.

She said the man was dressed in boxer shorts and socks with no shoes on.

Less than three weeks earlier on Jan. 28, another man was fatally shot a few blocks away and found with gunshot injuries in a parking lot in the 800 block of Scenic Highway. And in August 2017, another man was shot and killed in that same block during a possible robbery.

Police asked anyone with information about the Tuesday night shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
