A baby, estimated to be about six hours old, was found alive in a trash can inside the restroom of the New Roads Walmart on Friday night, police said.
The baby girl spent hours in the trash can, and was likely born in the restroom, according to a report from WBRZ.
Police chief Kevin McDonald said he got a call shortly after 8 p.m. that a store attendant had discovered the infant.
The baby was in stable condition at Pointe Coupee General Hospital and was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center late Friday night, McDonald said.
Investigators have identified and located the baby's mother, according to WBRZ. She checked into Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary after giving birth, and police are set to arrest her once she's released from the hospital.
