Anyone with unwanted or unused prescription drugs can safely dispose of their pills this Saturday when Baton Rouge authorities participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Medications can be dropped off confidentially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with no questions asked, according to a release from State Police.

Authorities ask that identifying information be removed from pill bottles prior to being dropped off. The event aims to reduce the alarming number of people who abuse prescription drugs, the release says.

Prescription pills in home medicine cabinets allow easy access to relatives, guests and intruders, the release says.

Studies show that individuals who abuse prescription drugs often obtained them from family and friends, according to State Police.

The following locations are accepting prescriptions Saturday:

• Troop A headquarters, 17801 Highland Road.

• Baton Rouge Police Department 3rd District Precinct, 11010 Coursey Blvd.

• Baton Rouge Police Department 1st District Precinct, 4445 Plank Road.

• Ochsner Health Center, Physicians Plaza 1, 16777 Medical Center Drive.
