Zachary man shoots pet repeatedly for not cooperating during bath, deputies claim; he is booked on animal cruelty, weapons counts _lowres

Deputies arrested a Zachary man Thursday accused of shooting his mixed black lab multiple times for not cooperating during a bath.

Several people called the East Baton Rough Sheriff’s Office to say that a drunk man wearing blue pants later identified as Brian Keith Blair, 51, had shot his dog several times, the Sheriff’s report says.

When deputies arrived at Blair’s home, they found the dog hiding under a vehicle bleeding heavily from multiple gunshot wounds. Due to the dog’s injuries, investigators had to euthanize the pet at the scene, the report says

Deputies arrested Blair at his home, but when detectives told Blair his rights he said he did not understand, cursing at the law enforcement officers.

Blair’s roommate told deputies he and Blair were trying to bathe the dog but that the dog was not cooperating. At that point, Blair got a pistol and said he was going to shoot the dog, the report says.

Blair’s roommate begged him not to shoot the pet, and Blair’s wife, who was standing outside with the two men, tried to talk him out of doing it, the report says. Blair’s roommate went inside to get his phone, and he heard several shots, the report says. Fearing for the lives of the dog and Blair’s wife, the roommate called 911.

Blair’s wife told deputies she saw him shoot the dog multiple times.

Detectives found a stainless .22 caliber pistol in a planter near the house, as well as nine .22 caliber shell casings.

After Blair was taken to prison and told on what counts he’d been arrested, he said, “I guess I deserve that, I’m sorry,” the report says.

Blair, 10646 Watson Drive, Zachary, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Thursday afternoon on one count each of cruelty to animals and illegal use of a weapon.
